The making of a Wickhead

Slow-made.
Hand-poured.
Obsessed over.

Before a Wickhead reaches your shelf, it goes through a ceramic studio, a designer's sketchbook, a scent shortlist, a thermometer and a lot of patience. This is the whole story.

Three Wickhead ceramic candles on stone in warm light
200 gOf wax in every candle
~35–40 hOf burn time
100%Poured by hand
1Ceramic you'll keep

Eight steps. Zero shortcuts.

Anyone can melt wax into a jar. We'd rather do it the long way, because the long way is the one you can smell, see and keep.

01The vessel

Handmade ceramics. Never off the shelf.

Every Wickhead starts as clay. Our vessels are handmade in their own size and design: that soft, slouchy sack shape, the folds, the glaze. Because they're made by hand, no two sit exactly alike.

It's the first thing you see and the last thing that leaves your home, so it gets the most attention.

"Mirror, mirror: she's fine, actually."
"Make it funny. Then make it beautiful."
02The design room

Designer discussions to find the vibe.

Before anything is printed, we sit down with designers who think a little like we do. Mood boards, one-liners, references, arguments about the exact shade of red. We keep going until the idea makes us laugh and the artwork makes us stare.

That's how a candle gets a personality instead of a label.

03The scent

Sourced from the best natural suppliers in India.

We source our fragrances from natural suppliers across India, then test them the only way that counts: poured, cured, lit and lived with. A scent has to smell good cold, better warm, and fill a room without shouting.

Only the ones that pass all three make it into a Wickhead.

Soy waxPlant-based and creamy, for a slow, even burn.
BeeswaxNaturally golden, with a soft honeyed warmth.
Organic blendsOther organic waxes, chosen for each scent.
04The wax

Soy, beeswax and other organic waxes.

Wax is the body of a candle, so we're picky about it. We work with soy, beeswax and other organic waxes, and match the blend to the scent it has to carry.

The right wax holds fragrance better, burns slower and leaves your vessel cleaner for its second life.

05 / The secret

Temperature is the name of the game.

A few degrees too hot and the fragrance burns off. A few degrees too cool and it never binds to the wax. So every batch is watched with a thermometer in hand, from the first melt to the final set.

MeltWax is melted slowly and evenly. Never rushed.
InfuseFragrance goes in at exactly the right heat, so it binds instead of burning off.
PourPoured at the point where the wax sets smooth, not cracked or sunken.
SetLeft to cool undisturbed, at room temperature, in its own time.
CureRested so the scent and wax settle into each other before it's lit.
06The pour

Each wick is centred by hand and each candle is poured one at a time, slowly, into its ceramic vessel.

07The cure + check

Then we wait. Every batch rests before it's checked by eye and by nose. Anything less than right doesn't leave the studio.

08The finish

The artwork goes on, the candle is packed with care and it ships across India from Pondicherry.

And after all that

You light it. You keep it.

Weeks of small decisions, for a few quiet hours of good mood at a time. And when the wax is gone, the vessel stays: as a planter, a pen pot, a home for your rings.

The wax leaves. Wickhead stays.

Made in Pondicherry.
Made to be kept.

Every Wickhead is hand-poured in small batches, by people who care far too much about candles.
